As ovotestis is defined as the simultaneous occurrence of testis ( testis) and ovarian tissue ( ovary ) in a gonad. An ovotestis is thus a special form of hermaphroditism.

Some representatives of molluscs and fish ovotestes occur as normal formation. In mammals, an ovotestis may occur due to a disturbance in the embryonic development.
