Owasco Lake

Owasco Lake is the sixth largest lake in the Finger Lakes in upstate New York in Cayuga County.

From the east it is the third lake in the Lakes Group. The name " Owasco " comes from the language of the Mohawk and Iroquois and means " crossroads ".

The lake is 17 km long ( north-south direction) and up to 1.6 km wide. The city of Auburn is located about 2 km north of the lake. It uses the lake for its drinking water supply. Owasco Lake measures at its lowest point 54 m and has a volume of 800 million m³. The catchment area of the lake is 541 km ². The lake lies at an altitude of 217 m. The outflow of Owasco Lake is regulated by a dam.

At the south end of the lake, the Hamlet Cascade is located. It consists of cottages, the South Shore Marina and restaurant.

Owasco Lake is an ideal place for relaxation and leisure. Because of its small size and its low depth, the seawater is heated very quickly. Swimming, water skiing and boating are popular activities on the lake. At the northern end of the lake of Emerson Park, a country park with a beach and a jetty. The shore in the northeast of the lake is private and belongs to the Owasco Yacht Club founded in 1889.

In the 19th century the Owasco Lake was a popular holiday destination in the upscale population. A casino north of Cascade housed the guests who arrived by train along the west bank of the lake. Remains of the railway line can still be seen. The casino burnt down in the early 20th century.
