Owen Arthur

Owen Seymour Arthur (born 17 October 1949 in Barbados ) is a former Prime Minister of Barbados.

Owen Arthur studied at the University of the West Indies and made in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts ( BA) in Economics and History and in 1974 a Master of Science in Economics. Then he stayed in Jamaica and worked in various positions in the public service of Jamaica and the Organization of American States (OAS ).

In 1981 he returned to Barbados and served as Chief Project Analyst at Treasury, before he went to the Institute of Social and Economic Research, University of the West Indies.

Arthur was a director of the Jamaica Scientific Research Council, the Barbados Industrial Development Corporation and the Central Bank of Barbados. He was also between 1982 and 1984 Chairman of the Barbados Agricultural Development Corporation.

His political career began when he was elected in 1983 in the Senate of Barbados. In 1984 he became a member of Parliament and appointed Leader of the Opposition in 1993.

From 7 September 1994 to 16 January 2008, he was the Prime Minister of Barbados.
