Owen County (Indiana)

Owen County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Spencer.

Geography

The County is located in the central southwestern Indiana, is located in the west about 70 miles from Illinois and has an area of 1004 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Putnam County, Morgan County, Monroe County, Greene County and Clay County.

Through the eastern Owen County of White River, the largest fully located in Indiana river flows. This also makes a short piece of the border to Monroe County. To the north is the Mill Creek, a source river of the Eel River, with the largest waterfalls of Indiana ( Cataract Falls), as well as part of Cagles Mill Lake. The Eel River itself flows through the south-westerly corner of Owen County.

History

Owen County was formed on December 21, 1818 from parts of Daviess County and Sullivan County. It was named for Abraham Owen, a colonel and hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Owen County 21,786 people in 8,282 households and 6,194 families. The population density was 22 people per square kilometer.
