Owen County (Kentucky)

Owen County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Owenton. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in the north of Kentucky, is located in the northwest about 10 km from Indiana and has an area of 917 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Carroll County, Gallatin County, Grant County, Scott County, Franklin County and Henry County.

History

Owen County was formed on February 6, 1819 from parts of Franklin County, Gallatin County, and Scott County. It was named after Colonel Abraham Owen, who was killed at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

According to the census of 2000, there were 10,547 people in Owen County. Of these, 110 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 4,086 households and 2,995 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.03 percent White, 1.13 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.46 percent from other races groups; 0.85 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.00 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4,086 households out of which 33.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.0 percent were single mothers, 26.7 percent were non-families, 23.1 percent of all households and 10.7 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.00.

Based on the county the population was spread from 25.5 percent population under 18 years, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64 years and 14.0 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 100.5 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 97.8 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the 33 310 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family was $ 38,844. Males had a median income of $ 29,329, women $ 21,426. The per capita income was $ 15,521. 12.1 percent of families and 15.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 17.1 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 19.9 percent of those 65 years.
