The Teckberg was used in the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt period and the early Middle Ages. In the second century AD a Roman estate was on owener district. How old the settlement is in fact, can not be resolved safely.

Since many places in southern Germany had similar names, the first documentary mention in 1261 can only be safely based on Owen. This mention is about a servant of the masters of Teck called evil knight. The research assumes that by the mid-13th century, above the old village across the Lauter the present city was founded, an approximately rectangular settlement with three major goals and Bernhard chapel on the marketplace. The road led through the city. Remains of the moat and the ramparts are still available. The church of the ancient village outside the city walls, St. Mary's Church ( 1267 on record ), was the grave place of the Dukes of Teck. Built with the city's founding city palace of the Dukes was destroyed, probably 1638/1639, in its place the present Town Hall was built in 1837.

1385, the city finally came to Württemberg and now belonged to the Bailiwick of Kirchheim.
