For the Great Exhibition of 1851 ( Great Exhibition ), he was described as " Superintendent of the works of the Exhibition " committed to the Crystal Palace, also in the reconstruction of the Crystal Palace in 1853 in Sydenham, he was responsible for its design. Although he turned in the preface to the thoughtless copying of ornaments, his work was in great demand as a template for the stencil painting. Its importance lies not in its completed buildings, but in his writings on the Alhambra and the grammar of ornament that had a major influence on the Polychromiestreit.
