Owen Sound is the seat of Grey County, Ontario, Canada. Situated at the mouths of Pottawatomi and Sydenham River in the Georgian Bay town has 21,753 inhabitants

History

The land on the upper Great Lakes in 1815 explored by William Fitzwilliam Owen and Lieutenant Henry W. Bayfield. The bay was named in honor of Admiral Sir Edward William Campbell Rich Owen " Owen's Sound". That was the older brother of Erkunders Owen.

The city was first known under the name of Sydenham and was settled by Charles Rankin 1841. Previously the area had been inhabited by the people of the Ojibway. 1851, the city got its present name. For a long time Owen Sound a major port city. She was known as the " Chicago of the North". Its location on Georgian Bay allowed an access to the upper Great Lakes, and the main rail lines transported goods to the south. After the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway port experienced a decline. The sea route enables vessels to direct travel between the upper and lower Great Lakes.

Owen Sound is both the gateway to a recreation area and on the other hand, the heart of Ontario's beef, apple and corn region.

Geography

The downtown Owen Sound is located in a deep valley of the Niagara Escarpment.

Traffic

At the intersection of Highways 6, 10, 21 and 26, located the place is a gateway to the Bruce Peninsula. Owen Sound has a ferry terminal. Here lays the ferry from Tobermory to South Baymouth.

Owen Sound is the smallest city in Ontario, which is home to a team of the Ontario Hockey League, one of the leagues of the Canadian Hockey League, the highest Canadian junior leagues.
