Owen Thomas Edgar

Owen Thomas Edgar ( born June 17, 1831 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † September 3, 1929 ) was according to information from the U.S. Veterans Department, the last surviving veteran of the Mexican-American War.

Life

Born in Philadelphia Edgar was drafted on 10 February 1846 by the United States Navy, and released on August 8, 1849. He provided the frigates Potomac, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, and Experience service. After his discharge, he worked for 21 years for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and then another 30 years for a bank. From 1917 he lived in John Dickson nursing home near Washington, DC. Edgar died on September 3, 1929 after a leg fracture after a fall. He was buried at the Congress Cemetery in Washington.
