Öwezgeldi Ataýew

Öwezgeldi Ataýew (Russian Овезгельды Атаев / Owesgeldy Atayev; * 1951 ) is a Turkmen politician and was until December 2006 President of the Parliament of his country.

As a politician

After the death of Saparmurat Niyazov President on 21 December 2006 according to the Constitution Ataýew should take up office as acting. However, the Security Council appointed the Deputy Prime Minister Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the interim president. The Security of the country have rejected Ataýews candidacy because the prosecution Time determined against him. The Russian daily Kommersant reported on the following day that he was arrested after the death Nyýazows. Ataýew was released on December 22 by Berdymukhamedov from the post of President of Parliament.
