Oxalbernsteinsäure is the trivial name of an organic tricarboxylic acid, or a β - keto carboxylic acid. It was discovered in 1948 simultaneously by the biochemists Severo Ochoa and Feodor Lynen. The free acid is unstable and decomposes to the keto compound, however, remained stable, their salts Oxalsuccinate (also Oxalosuccinate ).

Occurrence

The Oxalbernsteinsäure (or their salts) is an intermediate in carbohydrate metabolism oxygen consuming organisms. In this metabolic sequence, the citric acid cycle it is formed by oxidation of isocitric acid. By decarboxylation of it is converted to α -ketoglutaric acid. Both steps take place without the substrate by the enzyme isocitrate dehydrogenase separates.
