Oxelösund

Oxelösund is a locality ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Södermanland County and capital of the municipality of the same name. It is located 10 km south-east of Nyköping and is connected with it by the 1965 built riksväg 53. Both Nyköping and Oxelösund have ports on the Baltic Sea.

History

Oxelösund is a relatively young community. The natural harbor located here has been used for about 500 years. Over the planning of a railway from the mining region Grängesberg in Bergslagen directly to the Baltic Sea, the choice fell on the small settlement Oxelösund. An earlier plan for a railway from Bergslagen to the lake Vänern existed only on paper.

1873 Oxelösund - Flender Västmanland Järnvägsaktiebolag was founded, who bought almost the entire peninsula at Oxelösund. With the new harbor and built in 1913 ironworks the place grew rapidly.

20th century

At the beginning of the 1950s Oxelösund was a typical Swedish small town with wooden houses and adjoining gardens. As one of the last places before the administrative reorganization Oxelösund received city rights in 1950. The population amounted to 5200 people. The economy was heavily influenced by industrial plants, the iron plant with 700 employees was the largest employer.

1955, the Group acquired Gränges, the harbor and the railway line already managed and also owned several mines in Bergslagen, the majority of the shares for the ironworks. The largest part of the village was demolished to make room for a new iron. Today, only a few houses in the village remember the time around 1920. The iron work is a completely new city center in the style of the 1950s and a feeder road to Nykoping emerged.

1962 military installations were built upstream on the peninsula Femöre that should defend the important port.

Presence

For many years there was Oxelösund different ferry to Gotland and abroad. Most of these compounds were, however, set. There are discussions to settle the Hauptfährverkehr between Gotland and the Swedish mainland Oxelösund as the current port in Nynäshamn has no such favorable strategic position.

The community is a social democratic stronghold. The party won many local elections over 60 percent of the vote.

Twin Cities

Oxelösund is a member of the Association Douzelage cities since 1998.
