Oxford Classical Dictionary

The Oxford Classical Dictionary (OCD ) is a single-volume antiquity scientific Glossary.

The entries are kept relatively scarce in the rule, but written by recognized experts. The OCD ( in the 4th edition ) is relatively current, usually also further reading is listed. The OCD also enjoys an excellent reputation and almost covers the entire spectrum of ancient history: from the Political history to religious history and mythological figures. However, some significant blind spots can be identified in the field of Late Antiquity, which is hardly taken into account.

The first edition was published in 1949, followed in 1970 a revised edition, edited by Nicholas GL Hammond and Howard Hayes Scullard. The 3rd edition was published in 1996 by Simon Hornblower and Anthony Spawforth, the scope has grown to over 1600 pages. This edition was published in 2003 in a slightly revised version. 2012 published the 4th edition. In these several articles have been revised and updated, plus new lemmas were taken.

The third edition was published as a CD -ROM and is in a content significantly slimmed down and modified form (but for much cheaper ) available in The Oxford Companion to Classical Civilization.
