Oxford County (Ontario)

Oxford County is a Regional Municipality ( regional authority - roughly comparable to the German district ) in the Canadian province of Ontario with 105 719 inhabitants. The seat of government is located in the town of Woodstock.

This region is located approximately 150 km south-west of Toronto in the so-called Quebec City -Windsor Corridor, the Canada's most densely populated region. The landscape is characterized by a large area betriebenem intensive agriculture, with few lying between dairy and fattening farms. A perpendicular -scale road network, the local development represents the Highways Highway 401 and 403 bind Oxford County to the national road network. Available are two railway lines (almost only freight transport) between Toronto and the U.S. state of Michigan.

The climate is continental, with severe winters and warm, sometimes humid summer ( air table, see item Woodstock ). The largest river is the Thames River, which rises in several tributaries in the northern area of the region and is regulated in Oxford County by means of two reservoirs. Except for campsites with local significance no significant tourism exists.

Industrial, commercial and public facilities are concentrated in the three cities of Woodstock, Tillsonburg and Ingersoll. One focus is the light industry and the auto industry with two large factories (Toyota and General Motors). In addition to these three cities, there are several smaller settlements with local utilities. The outdoor area is relatively strong urban sprawl, are along the side streets - often found houses - in loose distance.

Administrative units

Oxford County is divided into eight administrative units:

  • Town of Ingersoll
  • Town of Tillsonburg
  • Township of Blandford - Blenheim
  • Township of East Zorra - Tavistock
  • Township of Norwich
  • Township of South - West Oxford
  • Township of Zorra

Each of these local government units (city or township ) has a local elected representative ( Municipal Council). The Council of the parent regional authority ( County Council ) is formed from the circle of these local representatives.
