Oybach

The Oybach is an approximately 10 km long right tributary of the Trettach. It runs as a mountain river in Oytal near Oberstdorf in the Allgäu Alps. Its valley is life support space of many rare animals and plants, and is therefore one of the special valleys of the Alps.

Course

It originates as a saddle creek on the northwest slope of the Jochspitze and forms in the rear Oytal along with several other source streams the Stuibenbach which merges after imposing Stuibenfall in the Oybach. The Oybach offers a unique natural spectacle. The river bed is completely dried up in the summer downhill over a long distance, even though plenty of water flowing from the mountain slopes to the valley. This is due to the extremely permeable limestone. During normal water level, the water flows underground in a broad stream valley. The river is then again below the Oytalhauses to light. Numerous " sources " let the river within a short time increase to a considerable mountain river.
