Ozias Humphry

Ozias Humphry ( born September 8, 1742 in Honiton, Devon, † March 9, 1810 in London) was an English painter.

Life

With 15 years of Humphry came to London in 1757. There he became a student at the private painting school of William Shipley. Later he worked for the gallery of the Duke of Richmond and received repeated instruction of Henry Pars. 1758, but no later than 1759, he returned to his native city. But Humphry in 1760 began a three-year apprenticeship with Samuel Collins in Bath. He accompanied his teacher later to Dublin and after a short stay in Exeter, he returned to Bath.

Thomas Gainsborough advised him to go to London, which Humphry 1763 did. With a letter of recommendation from John Trenchard to Joshua Reynolds, he was able to work in Reynolds 's studio and settle in London. 1772 Humphry scored his artistic breakthrough when the king during a visit to the Society of Arts a few miniatures bought him. He retired in 1772 in a riding accident a nervous suffering, which was the beginning of his eye condition.

A year later, he traveled with George Romney over Paris, Nice and Florence to Rome. In 1777 they returned via Switzerland and France back to the UK. 1779 Humphry was admitted as associate of the Royal Academy of Arts. At 43, he undertook in August 1785 a trip to Calcutta. In June 1786, he lived in Lucknow and longer time, he also worked in Benares. Problems with the climate and an aggravation of his eye condition brought Humphry 1787 to leave India again.

On March 16, 1788 Humphry reached London again. For some portraits of him the Nabob of Lucknow owed ​​the payment. By the end of his life Humphry fought unsuccessfully for payment. 1791 appointed the Royal Academy Humphry finally to a full member. Because now his eye diseases had become very bad, he gave up the miniature painting and devoted himself increasingly to pastel painting. His first portrait in this style of painting shows the Duke of Dorset.

1792 Humphry gave you the honorary title of Royal. Pastel portrait painter. At age 55 he attended in 1797, together with Benjamin West and James Wyatt in Fonthill Abbey William Beckford.
