It is the oldest suspension bridge on the European mainland.

History

The Chain Bridge was built from 1823 to 1827 and released on 12 September 1827. It was designed customized by Karl Schottelius and in the adjoining cottage Malapane. The cottage Malapane was at this time already well known for the production of bridge parts that were built throughout Prussia. She was also in possession of the royal hut to Malapane. Across the bridge was the road from Opole by Zawadzki. The bridge is made of cast iron and has a length of 31.50 meters and a width of 6.60 meters. It consists of 1600 parts. 1854, the bridge was strengthened.

1915 reported the Provincial Conservator of Monuments of the Silesian Province, the bridge already no longer met the requirements at that time in terms of their sustainability. Therefore, the Chain Bridge should be reduced in Malapane and it was offered by Royal Mining Office of Wrocław as a gift. Although the magistrate to Wroclaw brought on commendable interest, but had no suitable use for the bridge and also the high cost for removal, transportation and reconstruction of the bridge did not lead to rapid agreement. However, the Wrocław City Council brought the claim to the Mining Office to leave the iron parts of the city, but to delay the reconstruction to the need for a suitable footbridge is available. Finally, the city of Opole showed interest in acquiring the bridge. Ultimately remained the Chain Bridge in Malapane.

The problem with the traffic over the bridge was finally resolved in 1930 with the construction of a new bypass road west of Malapane. The original road was later interrupted by an extension of the royal hut. After a severe damage in 1945, the bridge for motor traffic was blocked. In 1969, the bridge was registered as a technical monument.

In the autumn of 2009 began extensive renovation work on the bridge, where the bridge was completely dismantled. Since the completion of the restoration work in September 2010, the Chain Bridge is illuminated overnight.
