P-2 Neptune

The AP -2H Neptune was a ground-attack aircraft of the U.S. Navy, were used by the four specimens during the Vietnam War.

Development

It is to P -2H- tags, bearing the electronic system TRIM ( Trails & Roads Interdiction Multi - sensor). About this targeting system little has been announced, but it probably contained a FLIR, low-level flight video and terrain following radar. The planes were also adapted to night operations, with flame dampers on the piston engines and " Still packages" to the additional turbojets. The armament described below ( which included two back -firing 20 -mm cannon, for targets that have already been flown over ) could also be supplemented by mounted on pin 7.62 mm M60 machine guns in on both sides of the removable rear windows were installed.

Use

The four converted aircraft were used by the U.S. military base in Cam Ranh Bay from 14 January 1968 in Vietnam. On 1 September 1968 the four aircraft were summarized VAH -21 Roadrunners in the relay. The squadron was then sent back out of service already on 16 June 1969. The AP -2H were mothballed. The machines were used primarily for testing new night vision devices and their applications. The findings were applied, inter alia, in the equipment of the Grumman A- 6C Intruder.
