P16.D4

P16.D4 were a noise band from Mainz, which was internationally influential in the 1980s until the 1990s.

P.D., permutative distortion

P.D. began in late 1979 as a solo project by Joachim Stender, who was then a student in Mainz by organizing festivals, the group " exhibition hall " and various journalistic actions at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz tried the (still acting jointly under the name of German New Wave ) to bring Punk / New Wave / No Wave / Industrial movement to Mainz. The beginning of 1980 came Ralf Wehowsky and Joachim Pense do so, and the first plate, the EP "Everyday " was released. Shortly afterwards the LP " Inweglos " in which even Ewald Weber, Achim Szepanski, Roger Schönau and Gerd Poppe were added, as well as a slew of appearances and cassette releases with productions of members and related parties of the Group.

The formation split towards the end of 1981. 's Core cast still produced as permutative distortion EP " Bridgehead in no man's land" ( with Thomas Memmler aka " Puppet killer fungus "), which worked out the typical style of the group again exemplarily: use cheap art electronics, conscious anti -professionalism ( Anyone can do it ); litany -like repetition programmatic phrases before a monotone sound / noise texture.

P16.D4

The remaining members, also with Wehowsky, went further than P16.D4. Through his influence got to work on the noise even more important, with an explicit reference to the Musique concrète. Stefan Schmidt, who joined them soon, presented with his classical composition training enriching factor

Characteristic of the group was the production, which was discussed in the products themselves: as the "recycling" designated continuous processing and reorganizing existing sound material from earlier productions, but also from other artists ( Mail Art ). This concept of material exchange is reflected in the projects ' Distant Structures " (1985 ) with the participation of international artists. Other LPs: Masse Mensch (1984 ), cows in 1/2Trauer (1984 ), nothing, nobody, nowhere, Never (1986, together with SBOTHI ) Captured Music ( 1989), Acrid Acme (1989). Your work process they described themselves as " Cut Ups, change of direction, change of velocity, volume creasing, harmonization, over- dubbing ... "

Selection

The plates (also tapes ), and later CDs from P16.D4 published under the label of "selection". This became a rallying point of also other people projects. In particular, with Achim Wollscheid, Charly Steiger, Christopher Wallhorn, Horst mouse, Marcus Caspers and Gilla Loercher were added some visual artists, their own projects conducted as a " selection optics ", but also designed stage performances of P16.D4. Achim Wollscheid produced (often called SBOTHI ) a number of his own records and cooperated with other artists such as Merzbow. With P16.D4 he cooperated intensively, the projects drove artistic progress, delivered and processed material.

Towards the end of the 80s the importance of group P16.D4 came somewhat from the various projects of selection members in various combinations ( which now again Joachim Pense counted ) back, especially after moving from selection to Frankfurt am Main.

The most successful of these projects was SLP: The fourth side of P16.D4 double album Nothing, nobody, nowhere, Never, which is a recycled product of the first three pages, is played on four turntables; the turntable is operated by a respective person, the needle is placed by a score in certain regions of the plate. A computer program mixes the four channels with hard cuts together new processes. SLP has been repeatedly listed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, among others, on the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music and the Ars Electronica Linz.

While the activities of selection optics still continued to run for several years, are only Achim Wollscheid and especially Ralf Wehowsky productive in the field of noise music today.
