Paa Joe

Paa Joe (actually Joseph Ashong, * 1947 in the region Akwapim, Ghana ) is considered the "most important Ghanaian coffin artists and manufacturers of figurative litters of his generation". His works are in the collections of many museums worldwide, including in the British Museum in London.

Biography

He started with 15 years of his ten-year apprenticeship as a coffin artist in Teshie at Kane Kwei. In 1976 he started his own business in Nungua. 2007 left him his two long-time master carpenter Eric Kpakpo and Kudjoe Affutu, both opened his own studio. 2008 Paa Joe moved from Nungua after Pobiman, where he now works with his sons Jacob and Isaac.
