Pablo Lara

Pablo Rodríguez Lara (* May 30, 1968 in Santa Clara ) is a retired Cuban weightlifter.

Sporting career

Lara's first international appearance was at the 1987 World Championships in Ostrava, where he finished in fourth place with 337.5 kg middleweight up to 75 kg. During the World Cup 1989 he was able to improve its performance duel to 357.5 kg, which meant a bronze medal in the snatch, and the silver medal in the total. 1991 at the World Championships in Donaueschingen, he won his first world championship with 355.0 kg.

At the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona Lara was able to confirm its performance and was 357.5 kilograms second behind Fedor Kasapu. Since both the same loads lifted, only the higher to 250 g of body weight Lara decided placement.

When in 1993 the classes were restructured, Lara stayed at middleweight, now to 76 kg. In the 1994 World Cup, he won again in the new class with 365.0 kg in single combat gold, before Ingo Steinhofel 362.5 kg. The World Championships a year later, Lara ended also with gold. In tearing, puncture and in a duel, he finished each ranked first and referred to the Bulgarians Joto Jotow in a duel on the second place. In the last test of pushing he failed at the world record weight of 208.0 kg.

In his second 1996 Olympics in Atlanta Lara won with 367.5 kg Olympic gold again before Jotow.

1997, his last world championships in Chiang Mai Lara was able to bring a valid attempt in pushing after he landed in the snatch with 160 kg on the 6th Place.

Others

  • Pablo Lara's brother Emilio (born 1970 ) was also weightlifter. He was sixth in the 1992 Medium weight up to 90 kg at the Olympics.
  • Lara lifted five world records. Four of them in pushing and one in a duel. He was until the abolition of the class to 76 kg world record holder in hits and in single combat.
