Packard Hawk

The Packard Hawk was one of four Packard automobiles, the Studebaker -Packard Corporation produced in 1958. The original Packard plant in Detroit was already leased to Curtiss- Wright ( and was sold to them soon ), and the Packard models were all umdekorierte Studebaker models with Packard Company sign. The Packard Hawk was actually a Studebaker Golden Hawk, which was slightly modified in design and equipment.

Instead of the large, almost vertical grille of the Studebaker Packard had a broad, low fish mouth just above the front bumper to the entire Fahrzrugbreite. In addition, there was a slightly sloping forward nose and a hood, which recalled the 1953 - Studebaker, but with a bulge like the Golden Hawk. Among them was the McCulloch - centrifugal compressor, with the Studebaker V8 with 4735 cc, an output of 275 bhp reached (202 kW). The sides of the tail fins were metallized PET film pasted that gave them a metallic - gold appearance. A spare tire cover ( without spare wheel underneath! ) Graced the trunk lid. The name PACKARD enthroned in large letters on the front mask; behind the Packard emblem and the name Hawk was mounted on the trunk lid and tail fins.

Inside the car was fully lined in leather and had the complete instrumentation. As with a padded armrest old aircraft was mounted on the outside of the side windows, a rare equipment detail.

The styling of the car was much discussed and described by some journalists as a " vacuum cleaner " look. Only 558 copies were built, and it may have played a certain role that the task of the brand Packard was already in the air. The Hawk was certainly the fastest Packard ever to be sold, as it most components shared with the Studebaker Golden Hawk. The car cost U.S. $ 3995, U.S. $ 700 more than the Studebaker models, but with more luxurious interiors.

Its rarity and its status as the most prestigious of the " Packard Baker " in recent years have ensured that the Packard Hawk is very much sought after by collectors. It achieves about twice the price of a corresponding Studebaker, this is still low compared to the better-known brands. Since the mechanics of the Studebaker was used mechanical parts are easier to find than the rare body parts.
