Paddy Donegan

Patrick " Paddy " Sarsfield Donegan ( Irish: Pádraig Ó Donnagáin ) ( born October 29, 1923 in Mainistir Bhuithe ( Monasterboice ), † November 26, 2000 ) was an Irish politician of the Fine Gael.

Biography

Donegan was originally a businessman and farmer. His political career began in 1954, when he was first elected as a deputy ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). There he represented for one term the constituency of Louth. After his election defeat in 1957 he was a member until 1961, representing the agricultural interests of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ). Then took place on October 4, 1961 his re- election as Members of the Dáil, in which he again represented the constituency of Louth now until 1981.

In March 1973 he was appointed by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Liam Cosgrave as Minister of Defence. After a violent political crisis because of the Emergency Powers Act, which ultimately led to the resignation of President Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, he was on December 2, 1976 Minister of the lands or after a renaming of the Ministry on February 9, 1977 Minister of Fisheries. This office he held until May 25, 1977.

1981 Donegan waived on a bid again for the House and retired from political life.
