The Spanish conquistadors named the cities traditionally by holy persons. Paete was an exception. Legend has it that once a young Franciscan priest from his superiors was commissioned to visit the newly founded cities along the Laguna de Bay. The priest did not know much about this area and asked a local for the name of this place. However, this understood the question wrong: He said after the name of the tool, which he used just to be asked. So he replied Paet ( gouge ). Hence the name " Paete ".
