Origin of the name

The first Christian settlers were Spanish soldiers and their families, located on the Dumagoc Iceland, an island in the bay of Illana off the coast of present-day Pagadian, stationed. Since many of them died of malaria and the remaining people were afraid of a disease referred to the place as soon " PANGADYE -AN ", a place " for it was to pray ."

Another version of the name origin says that a group from Luzon Coming arrived at the unknown for her place in the Zamboanga Peninsula. There they met locals and asked them for the name of the place. This understood but no word of them unknown dialect. The comers, after they had asked the question, showed with their heads up, probably to suggest the land before them. Since just a flock of birds flew over, the locals referred the question to the swarm over them. So they called the stranger the name of the birds; " GAGADIAN ", which was not understood by those either correct or changes in Pagadian over time.

History

Originally Pagadian was a barrio ( district ) administrative community Labangan, which belonged to the former province of Zamboanga. On March 23, 1937, the former district of the Executive Order No. was. 77 converted to a private management community.

To a notarized Pagadian City was finally on 21 June 1969 with the Republic Act No. 5478, also known as the city of Pagadian certificate paper.

When the province of Zamboanga, were divided into two provinces, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur, became the capital of the second province Pagadian City ( 17 September 1952).

As early as 1990, during the administration of President Corazon Aquino, has sought to relocate the administrative center of the district IX Zamboanga Peninsula of Zamboange City to Pagadian, but this proposal could not be enforced at this time. 2004, however, President Gloria Arroyo ordered to to transfer all administrative ministries to Pagadian, with the exception of the Office of Tourism, the Bureau of Labor and the Trade and Industry who continue to remain in Zamboanga City.

The relocation of the district administration to Pagadian City, which might have the purpose of making the city one of the most important hubs in the southern Philippines is not without controversy. Many people believe in Zamboanga City, the transfer would not last a punishment that you did not support the recent presidential campaign of Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo there. The installation remains therefore questionable, since Zamboanga not only has a much larger population, but also has a connection flight to Cebu, Manila and Malaysia. Zamboanga City is also a major commercial and transportation hub of western Mindanao.
