Paide

Paid ( German white stone) is a city in Estonia.

Geography

Paid located in the center of the country, from where also the city motto " Estonia's heart " (Estonian Eestimaa Süda ) is derived.

History

In the Middle Ages, the powerful in the 13th century castle of Paid described the Danish power sector. She was built of white limestone ( estn paekivi ), whence the German name derives White Stone. Paid was first mentioned in 1265 and received city rights in 1291. While the castle was destroyed, remained powerful, 30 -meter-high tower, the octagonal "Long Hermann", obtain and is now the city's landmarks.

Culture and sights

The main attractions are the ruins of the medieval Teutonic castle in 1993 with the restored tower, which now serves as a gallery, the town hall with its beautiful art nouveau facade (1920 ) and the main square with the 1848 converted church.

In the city museum, the interior decorated in the 18th century the town pharmacy is seen in the grandfather of Hermann Hesse, Karl Hermann Hesse ( 1802-1896 ), who worked as a district medical officer in Paid, sent his patients. He now lies buried in the cemetery Paid Reopalu.

Sports

The most famous football club in the region is Paid Linnameeskond, who represents in the First League Meistriliiga. The rugby team called Paid RFC is currently playing in the First League of Estonia. The basketball team plays KK7 also top notch.
