Painted Desert (South Australia)

The Painted Desert, literally Colored Desert, located 121 km north west of Coober Pedy and 73 kilometers south-west of Oodnadatta in the vicinity of the place Arckaringa in the Australian state of South Australia. The place Marla is 132 km away.

As a result of erosion over millions of years created a lake, in the next to differently colored minerals were deposited even further fossils. After the drying of the lake colored minerals the country with its dunes, mountains and valleys differently. These colors give this region a unique character, ranging from ocher, yellow, red to brown, and contrast depending on the light and time of day.

A large area of the Painted Desert is composed of mica minerals. 50 kilometers away from Oodnadatta are remarkable landforms such as the Arckaringa Hills, the Anna Creek Painted Hills and the so-called moon level. Two of the landscapes were used in the recent past often used as a film set. However, the access to the Anna Creek Painted Hills is not possible, but can become the area overflown.
