Azuero Parakeet ( Pyrrhura picta iron manni )

The Rotzügelsittich ( Pyrrhura picta), also known as Blue-fronted - Rotschwanzsittich, is a neotropical parrot species of the genus Rotschwanzsittiche ( Pyrrhura ). In addition to the nominate Pyrrhura p. picta following eight subspecies.

Features

The Rotzügelsittich achieved depending on the breed a size of 20 to 22 cm. The wing length is 104-130 mm. The plumage is generally green. Above the beak there is a narrow brownish- red band. The reins and cheeks are reddish - brown. The lower cheek area has a bluish tint. The forehead and the front of the crown are blue. The rear side of the crown, the head and neck are dark brown. The ear-coverts are brownish - white. The sides of the neck, throat and upper breast are gray-brown. On the chest, the color goes towards brown, each feather identifies a whitish to dull yellow collar and the chest gives a pip -shaped pattern. At a variable neck blue band can be seen. Lower abdomen, back back and upper tail-coverts are reddish brown. The bend of wing is red. The primary coverts and the outer webs of the primaries are blue. The tail top is brownish- red with a green base. The tail underside is dull brownish- red. To the brown iris runs a gray eye-ring. The feet are gray, the beak is dark gray. The immature birds the plumage is duller and the bend of wing is green with a few red feathers.

Subspecies and their distribution

  • The nominate comes in Venezuela from Amacuro Delta south before in the states of Amazonas, Amapá and Pará, as well as in Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana to the province of Bolivar, in Brazil.
  • The occurrence of Santaremsittichs ( Pyrrhura p. Amazonum ) is the Brazilian state of Pará north of the Amazon between Montealegre and Obidos. Is considered by some authors as distinct species.
  • The Little Blue-fronted - Rotschwanzsittich ( Pyrrhura p. Microtera ) is south of the Amazon from the Rio Madeira east to the Rio Tocantins in Pará south to northern Mato Grosso as well as into northern Goiás in Brazil. Is considered by some authors as a subspecies of Santaremsittichs.
  • The distribution area of Prince Lucien Rotschwanzsittich ( Pyrrhura p. Lucianii ) extends from the northwestern Brazil and the neighboring areas in south-eastern Ecuador continue to northeastern Peru along the upper Amazon River, the Rio Purus and the upper Rio Madeira. Other deposits are in the south-eastern Peru and Bolivia. Is considered by some authors as distinct species.
  • The Rotscheitelsittich ( Pyrrhura p. Roseifrons ) comes in Val do Juruá ago in the northwestern Brazil as well as in eastern Peru. Is considered by some authors as distinct species.
  • The occurrence of Pantchenkos - Blue-fronted - Rotschwanzsittich ( Pyrrhura p. Pantchenkoi ) is limited to the upper regions of the Perija mountains along the border between Colombia and Venezuela.
  • The Magdalena Parakeet ( Pyrrhura p. Caeruleiceps ) comes in Perijá Mountains, in front of Cesar and Norte de Santander in northeastern Colombia. Is considered by some authors as distinct species.
  • The Azuero Parakeet ( Pyrrhura p. Manni iron ) is endemic to the Azuero Peninsula in Panama. Is considered by some authors as distinct species.
  • The Jaraquiel Parakeet ( Pyrrhura p. Subandina ) was limited to the lower Sinú Valley in Colombia. Is considered by some authors as distinct species.

Habitat

The Rotzügelsittich inhabited Terra Firme rain forests (forests that are not regularly flooded ), várzea forests ( riparian forests ) and the adjoining open land. He is usually to be found at 600 meters altitude. In Peru and Colombia, it is found at altitudes 1200-2000 m.

Way of life

The Rotzügelsittich lives in pairs or outside the breeding season in groups from 5 to 12 individuals. Occasionally he is in association with the Rotbauchsittich ( Pyrrhura perlata ) and the Gold Wing Parakeet ( Brotogeris chrysopterus ) to observe the feeding trees or the Lehmbänken. It prefers dense, tall trees. The Rotzügelsittich is not site faithful and never remains long in the same place. Despite its striking voice, he is difficult to discern because of its dark appearance in the foliage. For bathing or drinking it regularly examined water bodies on or he goes to the mineral-rich soils of the clay banks of the river banks or in the rain forest in search of food. Status

Apart from the Colombian races and the Azuero Parakeet of Rotzügelsittich is numerous and widespread. Pantchenkos - Blue-fronted - Rotschwanzsittich and Magdalena parakeet are very rare and because of the deforestation of their habitats at risk. From Panama Azuero Parakeet probably exist less than 2000 copies. The Jaraquiel parakeet has not been detected since 1949 and is regarded as possibly extinct.
