Pajala Municipality

Pajala is a municipality (Swedish kommun ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Norrbotten.

The main town of the municipality of Pajala is. Other notable towns are Junosuando, Kangos, Korpilomobolo, Muonionalusta, Tärendö.

Geography

The municipality of Pajala extends älv approximately 150 kilometers along the west side of the river Muonio and Torne älv that form the border with Finland, from north to south. Through the municipal area also flows the Kalixälven, which is connected by the älv Tärendöälven, a bifurcation with the Torne. The town is located in Skandenvorland is largely covered by coniferous forest and traversed by large wetlands.

Economy

The traditional sectors Agriculture and forestry are still of some importance. The secondary sector is dominated by small businesses. The largest employer is the community itself

Attractions

Five kilometers east of the city Pajala is Kengis where from 17 to 19 century artefacts from processed iron and copper. There, copper coins were minted and 1674-1715. Today the manor northernmost Sweden can be visited, as well as the church and the church village. In Tärendö, about 40 kilometers west of Pajala there is an open air museum with about 20 different buildings. In Pajala itself is the world's largest sundial.

In the near Pajala is the Jupukkamasten, one of the four tallest structures in Sweden.
