Paklenica

Paklenica National Park is a national park in the Velebit mountain range 30 km northeast of the city of Zadar, on the Croatian Adriatic coast and about one kilometer from Starigrad. It has already been explained in 1949 to the National Park. The highest peaks are Vaganski Vrh with 1757 m. i J. and Sveto Brdo (1750 m. J. i )

Paklenica mean in Croatian " little hell ". The name was probably due to the rough and steep karst cliffs that are home to numerous caves and hidden from the sun illuminated the association with the underworld awaken. An alternative explanation attributes the name back to the frequently occurring in the park black pines whose juice ( Paklina ) was earlier used for the impregnation of boats.

The total area of this national park is 96 square kilometers. The National Park provides habitat for numerous rare and protected species: brown bears, lynx, eagle, the griffon vulture living in the National Park. In addition, numerous reptiles live in the Velebit: Horn poisonous vipers and adders come in the Karst of Croatia are relatively common.

Rock climbing

The national park has a large climbing area with over 400 routes of varying difficulty.

Hiking

To get to know the diversity of the park, provides 150 km of marked hiking trails available. In some areas, it is strongly advised that you will not leave because of still existing landmine danger. The camping is not permitted in the park, but some mountain huts and ( free ) Refuges are the wanderer available. Water is sufficient in the park and available in a drinkable quality.
