Pál Losonczi

Pál Losonczi [ pa ː l loʃontsi ] ( born September 18, 1919 in Bolho, Somogy, Hungary, † 28 March 2005 in Kaposvar, Somogy County ) was a Hungarian communist politician and former president.

The son of small farmers was one of the winners of the 1945 land reform. From 1948 to 1960 he was chairman of the agricultural cooperative "Red Star" in Barcs. Losonczi joined in 1945 the Party of the Hungarian Workers at which he later took from 1953 to 1989 as a deputy in the National Assembly.

On January 15, 1960, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture in the cabinet of Ferenc Munnich. This office he held until April 13, 1967 also in the Cabinets of János Kádár and Gyula Kállai.

On April 13, 1967, he was the successor of István Dobi Chairman of the Presidential Council and thus President of Hungary. On June 25, 1987 Károly Németh was elected his successor.

From 1975 to 1987 he was also a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party.
