Palace of Charles V

The Palacio de Carlos V ( German Palace of Charles V ) is a Renaissance castle located in the Alhambra of Granada. Emperor Charles V gave this castle in 1527 in order, but it was never completed, and he has never lived there. Since 1958, the Museum of Fine Arts is housed there.

History

Parts of the Nasrid Palaces have been demolished for the palace of Charles the Fifth. The two-story, nearly cubic seemingly built around a circular courtyard building in the Renaissance style was never properly completed. The design for the building dates from 1526 and was drawn up by Pedro Machuca, who led the construction and during the following 20 years. After his death, his son Luis Machuca took the lead, and when he died, J. de Orea. It was built at the Palace 1527-1568, after the building was set unfinished. At this time the Außenfasaden were indeed completed, but was still missing in the courtyard, the upper colonnade, which was only introduced in 1616. After centuries of a ruin, the palace was given its present roof in the 20th century. Since 1958, the building is home to, among others, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of the Alhambra.

Building

The building has a square base with a side length of 63 meters. Inside, it has a circular courtyard (patio ) with a diameter of 31 meters. This patio has a two-storey gallery of columns, the Doric columns with row of pillars and the upper consists of Ionic columns. The Aussenfasade is also designed differently. Its lower part is decorated in rustic style with Florentine patterns, while the upper part is divided by pilasters, between which are the windows. While the western and southern facades are richly decorated, this is not true for the other two sides. However, these are covered by the other buildings of the Alhambra.

On the west and the south side is in each case a manufactured gray marble Renaissance portal. The reliefs on the west portal exhibit contemporary battle scenes to designs Machucas. There is an octagonal chapel, whose planned high dome has never been run on the northeast corner of the palace.
