Palacio Salvo

The Palacio Salvo is a building in Montevideo, Uruguay, located at the intersection of the street Avenida 18 de Julio and Plaza Independencia. It was commissioned by the textile industrialist Italian origin, the brothers José and Lorenzo Salvo commissioned and designed by the architect Mario Palanti 1922. The October 12, 1928 was the official day of the inauguration. With a height of 105 m the striking building was built in Art Deco until 1935 the tallest building in South America.

The Palacio Salvo was built on the spot where once stood the Confiteria La Giralda. There Gerardo Matos Rodríguez wrote his piece La Cumparsita 1917, which is considered as the anthem of the tango. The planned served by the same architect but slightly smaller Palacio Barolo in Buenos Aires as a model for his time much criticized magnificent skyscraper. Today, the Palacio Salvo is a landmark of Montevideo and nostalgic reminder of the period of prosperity of Uruguay in the first third of the 20th century.

In 1995, the declaration of the Palacio Salvo for Bien of Interest Municipal. The following year he was classified as Monumento Histórico Nacional.
