Palatka is a city and also the county seat of Putnam County in the state of Florida with 10,558 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Palatka is located on the left bank of the St. Johns River and about 60 km south of Jacksonville.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 10,558 inhabitants distributed to 4,533 households. The population density was 541.4 inh. / Km ². 46.3 % of the population were white, 49.8 % African American, 0.3% Native American and 0.6 % Asian Americans. 1.5% were members of other ethnic groups and 1.6% in different ethnic groups. 4.6% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 29.8 % of all households lived in 35.2 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 60.9 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.48 persons and the average family size is 3.18 people.

31.7 % of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.5% were 20-39 years old, 23.1% were 40-59 years old and 20.6 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 34 years. 45.7 % of the population were male and 54.3 % female.

The average annual income was $ 20,116, while 37.6 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 96.21 % of the population spoke Spanish 3.07% and 0.27 % spoke German.

Traffic

The city is on U.S. Highway 17 (SR 15) and the Florida State Roads 19, 20 and 100 crosses. The Palatka station is a station of the trains Silver Star and Silver Meteor train Amtrak society on the route from Miami to New York City. He is listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1988. With the Palatka Municipal Airport, the city has its own airport. The nearest airports are the Gainesville Regional Airport (national, 60 km to the west ) and the Jacksonville International Airport (100 km north).

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 704 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) in the high range. There was a murder, 16 rapes, 29 robberies, 112 injuries, 189 burglaries, 634 thefts, ten car thefts and six arsons.
