Palatka, Russia

Palatka (Russian Палатка ) is an urban-type settlement in Magadan Oblast (Russia) with 4244 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is located in the western foothills of Kolymagebirges, approximately 60 line kilometers north of Magadan Oblastverwaltungszentrums on the left bank of the river Chassyn.

Palatka is the administrative center of the Rajons Chassyn. For the municipality ( Gorodskoje posselenije ) Palatka also four kilometers south west, across the river settlement Chassyn part with about 500 inhabitants.

History

The village was founded in 1932 in connection with the construction of Kolymatrasse, a road from Magadan to Ust- Nera and the gold mining centers of the area. He was named after a tributary of the opening out there Chassyn. The word palatka stands in Russian for tent, in this case represents probably but a transformation of the combination of the words Palja ( jukagirisch ) and Atkan ( ewenisch ) constitute - both in the meaning " stony river ".

1953 Palatka was awarded the status of an urban-type settlement. On December 30, 1966, was the administrative center of the newly spun-off Rajons Chassyn.

In the 1970s to the 1980s Palatka was primarily residential area for employees of a 15 kilometer north-eastern mining center in the settlement Karamken.

Economy and infrastructure

In Palatka is a repair for mining equipment and a factory for civil explosives, in the district Chassyn a gold refinery and syllable. In the area of potato and vegetable growing and cattle and poultry for regional supply be operated.

Palatka is located on the highway M56, as the Kolymatrasse today is officially known. From the main route there branches off a side road that leads through the 180 km distant Rajonverwaltungszentrum Ust- Omtschug, the Kolymastausee bypasses spacious west and reaches the M56 west of Sussuman about 500 kilometers again.

On September 1, 1941, the first section of a narrow-gauge railway ( track width 750 mm) was opened from Magadan to Palatka. The end point was reached in 1950, but in 1956 the track shut down again. Used have included steam locomotives produced in the GDR Series ГР.
