Palau, Sardinia

Palau is a municipality with 3774 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the north- east of Sardinia in the province of Olbia- Tempio. Palau borders the municipalities of Arzachena, La Maddalena, Luogosanto and Santa Teresa Gallura.

Above the coast a scenic road leads to Capo d' Orso, where, watching " The Bear", a gigantic formation typical of the Gallura granite rocks on the Costa Smeralda.

Traffic

Palau is a port city. From the small ferry port take up to 80 times a day car ferry to the island of La Maddalena. The average journey time is 15 minutes. The port is served by the ferries of the shipping companies Saremar, Enermar, Tremar and in some years also from Genoa, Naples and Porto-Vecchio ( Corsica).

Fortress Monte Altura

A few kilometers west of the town center of Palau is located on Monte Altura a fortress that was built in the years 1889-1891 from locally derived rock. She was part of the defensive system around La Maddalena.
