Palazzo Braschi

The Palazzo Braschi is a palace in Parione district, Rome.

The Palace is a neoclassical building, located between Piazza Navona, Campo de 'Fiori, the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Piazza di Pasquino. In the palace there is the urban Museo di Roma.

Was built the palace on behalf of Luigi Braschi Onesti, a nephew of Pope Pius VI. The design of the architect Cosimo Morelli took over. 1790 the area of Braschi with the financial assistance has been purchased by his uncle. The previously located on the property palace from the 16th century, the Giuliano Sangallo had since built for Francesco Orsini, was demolished. During the Napoleonic occupation of Rome, the construction project rested from February 1798. Located there, the art works were confiscated by the French. In 1809 Braschi Onesti was referring to the palace, where he was elected mayor of the city of Rome. In 1816, he died when the palace was not yet completed. Since the family fortune of Braschis was exhausted, remained unfinished construction until 1871. Finally, the family sold the Braschi Palace to the Italian State and the palace was completed. During the Fascist period under Benito Mussolini was located there until 1925, the Interior Ministry and the political headquarters of Mussolini. After the end of World War II refugee families were housed in the palace. 1952, the Museum of the city of Rome was housed in the building.
