Paleontological Site Arroio Cancela

The fossil finding site Arroio Cancela is a locality of fossil vertebrates from the Upper Triassic of Brazil.

Arroio Cancela is located in the center of more than 270,000 inhabitants, the city of Santa Maria in the district of Nossa Senhora de Lourdes of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The site is located in the 225 million year old red beds of the Santa Maria Formation at 107 meters above sea level.

35 meters above Arroio Cancela more fossil sites have been discovered: the fossil reference of Largo Padre Daniel Cargnin and the fossil reference of Bela Vista. Cargnin had once made ​​on the follow named him Fossils point ( point 1, Figure 2 ) the discovery of Eucynodontier Therioherpeton cargnini and to the fossil reference of Bela Vista (point 2, Figure 2) were fragments of a not yet determined the skull revealed. The latter sites are located near the Cerrito hill and are classified stratigraphically higher, they already belong to Caturrita lineup.

Description of the site

The fossil finding site is a part of the Geopark Paleorrota and is located about 600 meters from the central bus station of Santa Maria. In about 100 meters from the school State General Edson de Figueiredo is located on the corner Irmão Donato / Otavio Alves de Oliveira in the immediate vicinity of a shopping center.

The circular -bordered area covers nine hectares, it is from the street Osvaldo Aranha through to Avenue Fernando Ferrari von dem Bach Cancela, a Arroyo, drained. The creek has exposed the upcoming red sedimentary rock and thus allows access to the fossils. The respective fossil sites are shown as points 1, 2 and 3 in Figure 2.
