The Servizio ferroviario metropolitano di Palermo ( Italian, Urban Rail Palermo) is a municipal train system, which is operated in the greater Palermo Trenitalia.

History

The Urban rail traffic was opened in 1990 on the occasion of the Football World Cup. The line used the railway Palermo-Trapani from Palermo Centrale train station to Palermo Notarbartolo station, and until then the port railway. On the route four new breakpoints were built vespri, Imperatore Federico, Fiera, and the terminus Giachery.

In November 1992 the branch line over San Lorenzo Colli by Tommaso Natale has been integrated into the system. In 1994, the breakpoints Francia and Cardillo Zen were opened.

2001 after many years of construction, the tunnel Station Palazzo Reale Orleans was opened, which is located in the city center and is therefore very busy.

In the same year, the system was extended to the airport Palermo -Punta Raisi, where a new airport railway station was built.
