Paliano

Paliano is a city in the province of Frosinone in the Italian region Latium, located about 8161 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is 59 km east of Rome and 36 km northwest of Frosinone.

Geography

Paliano is situated on a hill in the countryside of Ciociaria.

The nearby towns are: Anagni, Colle Ferro ( RM), Gavignano (RM ), Genazzano (RM ), Olevano Romano (RM ), Piglio, Segni (RM ), Serrone.

History

In the Middle Ages Castrum Palliani was a strategically important place. Pope Martin V ( civil Oddo Colonna di ) gave the town and castle to his family, the Colonna. Pope Paul IV made ​​his nephew Giovanni Carafa, a brutal adventurer, Duke of Paliano. IV Ten days after the death of Paul, on 28 August 1559 Giovanni Carafa had assassinated with the approval of his brother, the Cardinal Secretary of State Carlo Carafa, his pregnant wife. Then the two brothers were tried under the new Pope Pius IV. The Cardinal Secretary of State was strangled in the Castel Sant 'Angelo and the Duke beheaded. Her accomplices were executed.
