Palikir

Federal State

Palikir is the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia in the Pacific Ocean.

The city is located in the northwest of the island of Pohnpei in the community ( municipality ) Sokehs, according to the 2000 census had a population of 6,227 inhabitants. Of these, only one unknown, smaller part lives on Palikir. In 1985, the construction of a new capital city for the Federated States of Micronesia has been enshrined in law. Since 1990 Palikir shall perform the functions of the capital and the seat of the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia. In an existing complex of several buildings all ministries as well as some federal agencies are housed.

On the same island about five kilometers north-east is the town of Kolonia, which was provisional capital of the country in 1986 after the country's independence. Mistakenly Kolonia is still often referred to today as the capital. However, Kolonia is still the capital of the state of Pohnpei.

Palikir is also the location of the campus of the College of Micronesia Pohnpei.
