Palindromic sequence

As Palindromic sequence a (short ) double stranded DNA sequence is known in genetics whose individual strands, each over the complementary strand having a horizontally mirrored base sequence.

The following is an example of a palindromic sequence:

Most of the DNA-binding and modifying proteins recognize short palindromic sequences and carry out their activities symmetrically on both strands. The above example is the recognition sequence of a known restriction enzyme EcoRI. EcoRI recognizes this sequence within a DNA double strand, and cut both strands of DNA in each case between the nucleobases G ( uanin ) and A ( denin ). The shortest Sequenzpalindrom with an important feature is the CpG dinucleotide, in significant epigenetic DNA methylation of CpG islands.
