Palio

The Palio in Italy ( and former Italian areas such as Istria and this neighboring islands in the Adriatic) a competition between the neighborhoods of a city or between neighboring regions.

History

He is generally with horses or other animals (mainly donkeys ) discharged. But there are also other forms, such as contests or on boats with cart, called Heuwagenrennen. The origin of these events comes from the time of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, when the Italian cities had fought for freedom and independence. Even today, the Palio is a solid, partially revived tradition in many Italian cities and is organized with enthusiasm, but also as a tourist attraction, mostly in costumes from the time of tradition.

The winner of the Palio generally gets a banner with the town and / or symbol of the patron saint. But there are also other awards.

The most famous and world-famous Palio is the Palio di Siena, which is twice a year, fought on July 2 and August 16 in the central Piazza del Campo. Outside Italy there is a Palio in Mendrisio Ticino and in Oberkochen annually to the town festival.
