Paljassaare

Paljassaare is a municipality (Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn.

Location

The district is located in the Põhja -Tallinn District ( "North -Tallinn " ), about six kilometers from the center of Tallinn. Paljassaare has 594 inhabitants (as of 1 May 2010).

Paljassaare (literally " barren island " ) is located on the peninsula ( Paljassaare pool saar ). The two headlands of the Peninsula hot Suur- Paljassaare pool pool saar saar ( with the promontory Kõrgemäe ots) and Väike Paljassaare. Between the two headlands the small bay Saartevahe haak is (too German " hook between the islands ").

To the west lies the Bay of Paljassaare ( Paljassaare Laht ), to the east of the Bay of Tallinn ( Tallinna Laht ).

The headland Paljassaare was late from two larger islands. On the map Ludwig August Mellins from the late 18th century, the two islands Suur- Karli were ( "Greater Karl" ) and the ( much larger ) Väike Karli ("Little Karl" ) with its boundary warden - house as separate islands recorded. Description

For decades, large parts of the peninsula were closed military zone. In 1912 started the construction of a Russian naval fortress. To the quay of the naval port of the sea fortress led a small railway. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia was on Paljassaare a small residential district. There is also a fishing port were ( Paljassaare sadam ) and created the central pumping station of the city of Tallinn.

Paljassaare is now partially used as an industrial and port area and is in the north conservation zone.

The 43.6 -acre harbor Paljassaare is approached only by cargo ships. He has a cargo handling capacity of up to 3 million tons per year. In Paljassaare is also one of Estonia's largest fish processing factories. A large, modern sewage treatment plant of the city of Tallinn is located in Paljassaare.

The northern and western part of the peninsula, are year-round in the large areas under water, and the small island in front of the beaches Paljassaares form a natural habitat for birds, which occur over two hundred ornithological species. The area is designated as a bird sanctuary under the Natura 2000 program.
