Pall Mall (London)

Pall Mall [ Pal Mæl ] is a street in the City of Westminster in London. It is parallel to The Mall Boulevard from St. James 's Street across Waterloo Place to the Haymarket; Pall Mall East continues to the Trafalgar Square. Pall Mall is a major thoroughfare in London's St James's. The nearest London Underground stations are Charing Cross and Green Park.

The street name is derived from the croquet -like game, " Paille - Maille ", which was practiced there in the 17th century.

Pall Mall is known as the home of numerous gentlemen's clubs that were built there in the 19th and early 20th centuries; these include the Athenaeum Club, Travellers Club, the Army and Navy Club, the Reform Club, the United Services Club (now seat of a Manager Association ), the Oxford and Cambridge Club and the Royal Automobile Club.

Pall Mall was at times also the center of London art scene; In 1814 there were the Royal Academy, the National Gallery (London) and Christie's auction house, but none of them stayed there a long time.

Almost all land on the south side of Pall Mall for centuries the crown. St. James's Palace is located on the southern side of the street at its western end. Marlborough House, once a royal residence includes, east of the palace. The Carlton House of the Prince Regent once stood on the eastern end of the street. Pall Mall was once the site of the War Office, for the Pall Mall was synonymous (as Whitehall representative of the administrative center of the British government stands ). There were at least two other architecturally important ducal residences on this street, which had designed Schomberg House and Buckingham House, the London residence of the Dukes of Buckingham and Chandos, Sir John Soane for them ( not to be confused with that of Buckingham House, which for Buckingham Palace was ).

The former branch of the Midland Bank on Pall Mall has designed Sir Edwin Lutyens.

This road is also named after the brand of cigarettes Pall Mall.
