Palm Bay is a city in Brevard County in the U.S. state of Florida with 103 190 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Palm Bay is located on the Indian River, which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway, just off the coast of the Atlantic. At the city limits, the city Melbourne, West Melbourne, Melbourne Beach, Grant - Valkaria and Malabar. Orlando is located approximately 100 km north- west of the city.

History

The original inhabitants of the area around present-day Palm Bay were Indians from the tribe of Timucuan. The first European settlers arrived in 1850 and lived primarily from the timber industry and the cultivation of oranges. The settlement was initially the name Tilman, but was renamed in the 20s of the 20th century in Palm Bay. Until the construction of the railroad 1894, held the city's growth in check, but from then on improved transport links brought a first boom. In the 1960s, Palm Bay was given the status of a city. The city's economy benefited from the construction of the Kennedy Space Center, which is 65 km further north was at this time on the Merritt Peninsula.

Demographics

The average size of a household was 2.60 persons and the average family size is 3.05 people.

26.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.8 % were 20-39 years old, 28.7 % were 40-59 years old and 20.9% were at least 60 years old. The median age was 40 years. 48.3 % of the population were male and 51.7 % female.

The average annual income was $ 44,768, while 13.4 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 88.55 % of the population spoke Spanish 7.46% and 3.99 % had a different mother tongue.

Traffic

Palm Bay is from Interstate 95, U.S. Highway 1 (SR 5) and the Florida State Roads 507 and 514 crosses. In addition, the freight railroad of the Florida East Coast Railway runs through the town. The Melbourne International Airport is around 10 km north of Palm Bay.

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 262 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) within the average range. There were four murders, 19 rapes, 60 robberies, 438 injuries, 740 burglaries, 1,622 thefts, 98 auto thefts and arsons ten.
