The Palm Pre ( stylized spelling Palm Pre, English pronounced [ pri] ) is a smartphone HP Palm with both extending and thumb touch screen keyboard. It is the first phone from Palm with the new, self-developed and Linux-based operating system HP webOS.
Launch
The smartphone and the operating system used webOS were presented on 8 January 2009 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas for the first time to the public and very well received by the experts: It won at the trade fair both the Best of CES 2009 Award and the People's Voice Award.
The launch of the CDMA version was made in the United States on June 6, 2009. U.S. exclusive partner is the nationwide network operator Sprint Nextel.
At the Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona, the world's largest trade fair for mobile, Palm introduced on 17 February 2009, a GSM and UMTS-enabled version.
First distribution partner in Germany is O2, where the Palm Pre is available since 13 October 2009.
In January 2010, the Palm Pre Plus version at the Consumer Electronics Show was presented in Las Vegas. The differences from the "normal" version are in a slightly different design, improved processing and twice the memory capacity (RAM, internal memory). The Plus version is available in Germany since April 28, 2010. August 2010 O2 has decided to phase out the sale of the basic version and offer new, only the Pre .
Properties
In the Palm Pre a working OMAP3430 System on a chip from Texas Instruments, among others consisting of a 600 MHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU ( underclocked to 500 MHz ), a PowerVR SGX 530 graphics processor, a 430 MHz C64x digital signal processor and an ISP ( Image Signal Processor). As memory serve 256 MB RAM; for data is an eight GB large, internal flash memory available, which can not be extended.
The smartphone is designed as an extendable vertical slider with QWERTY keyboard ( QWERTZ in Germany and Austria ) and has a capacitive, multi-touch -enabled touchscreen with a resolution of 320x480 pixels and a screen size of 3.1 inches ( about 7.9 cm); below the screen is a touch-sensitive strip for controlling gestures. The Linux-based operating system webOS supports multitasking: all running applications are displayed as cards, between which the user can switch using a single gesture.
The Pre has a brightness sensor that adjusts the display and keyboard backlight depending on ambient light. In addition, a proximity sensor ensures that the display is turned off when you hold the phone to your ear.
The instrument incorporates a built-in digital camera with a maximum resolution of three megapixels and an LED flash is installed. The camera only has a fixed focus. It can also be recorded videos.
As an interface, a Micro -USB port, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR with A2DP and are Wi-Fi 802.11b / g are available. This smartphone has an integrated GPS receiver and supports AGPS.
In Europe, the Palm Pre and Palm Pre as GSM ( Quadband) / UMTS ( Dual Band) version offered as is available on the U.S. market both a CDMA device ( Sprint, Verizon) and GSM device (AT & T).
The Pre battery has a capacity of 1,150 mAh. Palm gives a standby time of 200 hours and a talk time of 5 hours. These values apply to both UMTS and GSM. Load the accumulator can be either via the micro-USB port or wirelessly via induction of the so-called Touchstone. To use this function, in the Pre a special rear cover necessary, the successor model pre already comes with a compatible cover.
