Palm Springs is a city in the Coachella Valley in Riverside County in the U.S. state of California, with 44,552 inhabitants (as of 2010 census ). The metropolitan area has a size of 245.984 square kilometers. You can reach the city by Interstate 10 and California State Route 111; it is about 180 miles from Los Angeles.

In the near Palm Springs, the longest cable car in the world is in one piece, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to Mount San Jacinto. Also found here annually to the Spring Break the west coast instead, mainly in the North Palm Canyon Drive (Highway 111) and the Indian Avenue and in the hotels and motels adjacent.

History

The original inhabitants of Palm Springs Agua Caliente belonged to the tribe of Cahuilla Indians. The Spaniards called the place " la palma de la mano de Dios " (engl.: " The palm of God"). The Indians is an approximately 125 square kilometer reserve, which occupies about one-fifth of the city area.

Since the 1960s, Palm Springs has the reputation of being a recreation center for the American high society. Big stars such as Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra have built or bought in this time, houses in Palm Springs. This fact contributed to the city 's reputation as a place in which to recover the stars. In the United States Census 2000 42.807 inhabitants were counted in 20 516 households, and 9,457 families residing in Palm Springs. The population density was 175.4 inhabitants / km ². The number of housing units was 30 823, which corresponds to a density of 126.3 housing / km ².

The inhabitants passed in 2000 to 78.33 percent White, 3.93 percent African American, 0.94 percent Indigenous, 3.83 percent Asian, 0.14 percent Pacific Islander, 9.78 percent were from other ethnic groups and 3, 06 percent from two or more races. 23.72 percent of the population reported in the Census to be Hispanic.

Of the population 17.0 percent were less than 18 years old, 6.1 percent was attributable to the age group of 18 to 24 years, 24.2 percent were between 25 and 44 years old and 26.4 percent between 45 and 64 years. 26.2 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 107.8 males; each accounted for 107.4 men for every 100 women in the over 18 year olds.

The average income per household was $ 35,973, and the median family income was U.S. $ 45 318. The men had on average an income of 33 999 U.S. $, compared to U.S. $ 27 461 for women. The per capita income amounted to U.S. $ 25,957. Approximately 11.2 percent of families and 15.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line; this applied to 28.2 percent of those under age 18 and 6.8 percent of people aged 65 years or older. That income in the statistics appears to be relatively low is mainly because that Palms Springs has a very high proportion of ( quite wealthy ) pensioners and people with second homes whose income is not taken into account.
