Palmerston (Northern Territory)

Palmerston is a city in Australia's Northern Territory and is located on the north coast about 20 km from the territory capital Darwin.

The city was founded in 1981 after settlement land was scarce in the city of Darwin. The name of Palmerston was the original name of Darwin before renaming 1911. The city has around 24 000 inhabitants and thus Alice Springs overtaken as the second largest city of the Northern Territory.

Boroughs

Palmerston is divided into a total of 18 suburbs ( districts ), which are set by the government of the Northern Territory.

The original four districts that were created in the early 1980s, are Gray, Driver, Moulden and Woodroffe. These are also the most densely populated municipalities, followed by Bakewell and Durack. These six and Bella Mack, Farrar, Gunn, Palmerston City, Rosebery and Yarrawonga form the city center. Yarrawonga is primarily industrial area in the northeast.

Then there are the suburbs of Archer, Johnston, Marlow Lagoon, Mitchell, Pinelands and Zuccholi. Last 2007, the city districts Johnston and Zuccholi were defined that have hardly been settled. The municipality Archer has no resident population.
