Pampa is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Gray County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in North Texas, in the so-called Texas Panhandle in the north- west of the county, at the junction of U.S. Highway 60 to Highway 70, 152 and 273 and has a total area of 22.6 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The foundation of the city dates back to 1887, when the Southern Kansas Railway einrichtete a railway station at this point. The first inhabitant was Thomas H. Lane, a railroad foreman of this section, who settled here with his family. The place was first called Glasgow and then Sutton. The name Pampa got the place, as the area was similar to the Pampas in Argentina.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 17,887 people in 7,387 households and 5,074 families. The population density was 791.1 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 83.69 % White, 3.85 % African American, 1.07 % Native American, 0.41 % Asian, 0.03 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 8.22 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.73% were of mixed descent, and 13.72 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 7,387 households, 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.9 % were married couples living together. 9.8 % had a female householder with no husband, and 31.3 % were non-families. 28.8 % of all households were single-person households, and 15.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size amounted to 2.94.

25.9 % of the population were under 18 years old, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 25.4% 25-44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.7 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 86.8 males.

The median income for a household was $ 31,213, and the median income for a family $ 39,810. Males had a median income of $ 32,717 versus $ 20,492 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,791. 14.8 % of the population and 12.1 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 19.7 % have children under the age of 18 and 9.4 % of those 65 or older.
